12/24/22 - Weekend Listening from Intercontinental Exchange
Our guests this week: CNBC's Julia Boorstin and the FT's Rana Foroohar
It’s Christmas Eve and global markets, and the news they create, have momentarily quieted.
In the trade of financial journalism, however, reporters don’t divert their gaze for long from their feeds. In broadcast, CNBC, and in print, the Financial Times -- to name but two -- never rest.
Last week, NYSE President Lynn Martin joined CNBC’s David Faber and Carl Quintanilla for a look back at 2022 and a look ahead to 2023. And in Europe, the FT’s Philip Stafford and Alice Hancock continue to break news on the continent’s energy crisis. Their latest story on Wednesday -- “EU energy regulator casts doubt on bloc’s ‘untested’ new gas price cap” -- continues their impressive string of scoops from London and Brussels.
If you find yourself needing some last-minute holiday gifts, CNBC and the FT can also help there as well. Two of their crack journalists have debuted new books, including CNBC’s Julia Boorstin's WHEN WOMEN LEAD: What They Achieve, Why They Succeed, and How We Can Learn from Them, and the FT’s Rana Foroohar’s HOMECOMING: The Path to Prosperity in a Post-Global World.
For that someone on your list, you can get digital versions or pick up a hardcopy at your local bookstore. As 2022 ticks toward its end, both books offer insights into the years ahead. Both Julia and Rana joined us recently in separate episodes of Inside the ICE House.
The view from Los Angeles:
CNBC’s Julia Boorstin Weighs In on WHEN WOMEN LEAD Julia Boorstin, CNBC’s Senior Media & Tech Reporter, returns to her writing roots with WHEN WOMEN LEAD: What they achieve, Why they succeed, and How we can learn from them. The creator of CNBC’s Disruptor 50 and its “Closing the Gap” initiative, Julia recounts the triumphs and setbacks of a cohort of female founders, entrepreneurs, and leaders. This episode interweaves Julia’s own career experiences with the chronicle of the hurdles that female CEOs overcome on their journey to success.
The view from Brooklyn:
FT’s Rana Foroohar Heralds an Economic HOMECOMING In her illuminating new book, HOMECOMING: The Path to Prosperity in a Post Global World, the Financial Times Global Business Columnist Rana Foroohar shares her views on why the great globalization experiment has failed and what it really means for the US and the world economy. She joins the podcast to talk about her book, the genesis of her thesis, and chronicles her career as an international journalist for some of the world's leading financial publications.

With a wrap on our 337th episode, that does it for 2022. I’m grateful for your listenership and for the team that puts this show together, week after week. We’ve been at this for nearly five years, and we couldn’t have done it without our executive producer, Pete Asch, and broadcast engineers Ian Wolff and Ken Abel, who have been there since the beginning. Thanks also to Jess Tatham, Isabella Bezzone, and Stephan Capriles, who have stepped in as episode producers this year (Isabella produced both of these episodes), and to everyone at ICE and the NYSE who help make the show happen.
Weekend Listening will take a breather next Saturday and return with vim and vigor on January 7.
